Vybz Kartel To Sue For Loss Of Income While Detained By The Police

After being held and detained for questioning by the police for over two weeks, popular dancehall deejay Vybz Kartel was finally released on Friday (July 16) without a charge, but if his lawyer has her way, this won’t be the end of the matter. According to reports, his lawyer – Valerie Neita-Robertson – believes that the Government overstepped its bounds with the prolonged detention of Kartel, and that he has lost money as a result of missed shows and appearances (locally and in the Caribbean) which he would have been paid for. Additionally, she has pointed out that the order of detention that was served on Kartel, did not state a reason as to why he was being detained, and there was no specific offence which the police actually sought to question him about while he was detained.

At this time, Kartel is said to be in negotiations with the organizers of Reggae Sumfest regarding his expected appearance on Sumfest’s Dancehall Night (Thursday, July 22) later this week. Listen out for many new Vybz Kartel tracks in the near future, several of which reference his recent incarceration.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Original article can be read here.

The Return Of Jeremy Harding To Music Production

Just like the name of his debut rhythm fearless, producer and manager Jeremy Harding has proven himself to be just that in his attitude towards life business and music.

Starting out years ago as a youngster with a love for music, Harding turned to disc jocking while living in Toronto.

Harding soon found his calling as a producer and musician and, from there, became the high-profile manager of International star Sean Paul.

Demonstrating some of his guitar skills to The Sunday Gleaner recently in his high-tech 2 Hard studios, Harding pointed out he had done the ins and outs of the entertainment industry and is back to his first love – music.

In the ’90s when the ‘Play-ground’ rhythm was launched, Harding was a producer to look out for with hits such as Who Am I/Sim-Simma with Beenie Man, Infiltrate with Sean Paul and Nike Air by Mr Vegas. he described his sound as ‘experimental’. He said, “the point of view which I took as a record producer was really from being a DJ and learning how to manipulate records, and using samplers and studying a lot of hip-hop production outside of Jamaica, where I think at the time most of the producers came from an instrumentalist background.”

It was his background that lead to Harding’s ‘unique’ electric sound that attracted a then-struggling Sean Paul. Harding started working with Sean Paul as his manager in 1997 after recording much of his work and handling his business interests.

Harding soon filled the role of the steadying and calming person around the rising Sean Paul.

While he is still managing Sean Paul and Stephen McGregor, Harding is based in Jamaica where he works on his 2 Hard label.

Vybz Kartel’s Detention Extended

Vybz Kartel

Popular dancehall deejay Vybz Kartel, who was detained by the police for questioning last week, will be spending even more time in jail, as his order of detention which was for five days, has now been extended by another 30 days. Kartel had been named recently by the St. Catherine South police as a “major person of interest”, and turned himself in several days later. He is reportedly being questioned about criminal gang activity in the Portmore area.

Reports indicate that Kartel’s legal team will be seeking his immediate release at an Emergency Powers Review Tribunal, and that papers are being prepared this weekend in order to secure a hearing at the Tribunal on Monday (July 12). If they are unsuccessful, Kartel will likely remain in jail until late July / early August.

Notably, Vybz Kartel is booked to perform at Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay later this month, and several other events in Jamaica and in the Caribbean over the next few weeks; he will miss all these commitments if the challenge on the detention order fails.

Godfather of Dancehall, Sugar Minott, dead at 54

FOUNDATION reggae and dancehall artiste, Lincoln ‘Sugar’ Minott passed away Saturday night at the University Hospital of the West Indies in St Andrew.

According to Peter Burke, a close associate of the singer, Sugar Minott had complained of feeling ill on Saturday and was taken to the hospital where he died at minutes after 10 pm.

“Sugar had a heart condition and it was about a year and a half ago that he got the first scare. He was in Canada at the time and I was with him. But as soon as the flutters subsided, Sugar was back to being his old self. That is just how he is,” Burke told the Observer.

“This is just so sudden and unexpected. Sugar Minott has made a major contribution to the music business … he was truly an icon and I am going to miss him tremendously,” Burke said,

Sugar Minott, who was born Lincoln Barrington Minott on May 25, 1956, earned for himself the moniker Godfather of Dancehall. He is credited with being the pioneer, who, by laying vocal tracks over the original tapes from the ’60’s, rather than using a live band — as was the norm in those days — caused a revolution in the sound that brought a new style to Reggae music known as dancehall.

A prolific songwriter and singer, Sugar Minott is has over 60 albums and is known for such anthems as Herbsman Hustling, Mr DC, House is not a Home, No Vacancy, Good Thing Going and Never Gonna Give Up Jah.

The veteran singer also distinguished himself as a talent scout/producer and early on in his career established his Black Roots label, which led to the creation of a sound system and a company, Youthman Promotions, to give young artistes a “buss”. Artistes such as Little John, Triston Palmer, Barry Brown, Tony Tuff, Junior Reid, Yami Bolo, Don Angelo, Tenor Saw, Nitty Gritty, Garnet Silk who did his first recording for the Black Roots label, Tony Rebel, Colorman, Daddy Freddie, Johnny Osbourne, Steve “Shalom” Harper are among those who passed through Youthman Promotions.

On hearing of his passing, singers Freddie McGregor, Johnny Osbourne and Leroy Sibbles reportedly volunteered to do a spontaneous tribute at the Rose Garden in Brooklyn New York, where Sugar was scheduled to perform last night. Minott also reportedly had gigs in California later this week including the popular Reggae on the River on July 18.

The Reggae music fraternity has been rocked by a number of deaths in recent months. Minott’s death follows on the heels of IRIE FM founder Karl Young and Voicemail member O’Neil Edwards.
