After being held and detained for questioning by the police for over two weeks, popular dancehall deejay Vybz Kartel was finally released on Friday (July 16) without a charge, but if his lawyer has her way, this won’t be the end of the matter. According to reports, his lawyer – Valerie Neita-Robertson – believes that the Government overstepped its bounds with the prolonged detention of Kartel, and that he has lost money as a result of missed shows and appearances (locally and in the Caribbean) which he would have been paid for. Additionally, she has pointed out that the order of detention that was served on Kartel, did not state a reason as to why he was being detained, and there was no specific offence which the police actually sought to question him about while he was detained.
At this time, Kartel is said to be in negotiations with the organizers of Reggae Sumfest regarding his expected appearance on Sumfest’s Dancehall Night (Thursday, July 22) later this week. Listen out for many new Vybz Kartel tracks in the near future, several of which reference his recent incarceration. Original article can be read here.
